Mom’s memorable discussion to me was about how she and everyone else lived through the difficult, yet immensely romantic World War II era. The V-E day (May 8, 1945) and V-J Day (August 15, 1945) are branded in everyone of the United States traditional or silent generation.
Mom underwent RN training at Marquette University (Jesuit) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her college dormies were friends until death. I distinctly remember flying from Colorado to Wisconsin so as to drive my Mom from Green County, Wisconsin to these Milwaukee Marquette mini-reunions. Yes, Mom was in the middle of the pack of sneaking out of the dorm after 10 PM when the resident nun fell asleep. These gals left college with the cemented friendships that enveloped World War II. Most college friendships become a “Gone With The Wind” scenario.
The post World War II renaissance of arts music, industry, education, and science occurred shortly after V-J Day amidst feelings of sheer happiness for what we have. Spiritual growth, being alive, growing financially, and interrelating amongst our peers was critical to Mom’s generation.
